The manufacturer of AVIA trucks earns "Safe Company" certification

Wednesday, 18. May, 2011

Prague - On Tuesday, 17 May 2011, Vít Šubert, the human resource director of Avia Ashok Leyland Motors Praha, accepted the "Safe Company" certificate from Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Karl Machotka and the General Inspector of the State Labour Inspection Office Rudolph Hahn in the Opava Municipal House.

"We value this distinction, as only 64 companies in the Czech Republic are holders of "Safe Company" certification. Furthermore, the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs and the State Labour Inspection Office regard the promotion and implementation of this program as highly important and would like to continue their support in the future" said Vít Šubert, adding:  "The certification is a proof that we have introduced a functioning system of safety management and the protection of health at work, one that meets the requirements of Czech regulations, but also those in effect in other EU countries. Our employees were an important source of information for the local labour inspectors, and we are pleased that they likewise see the results of long-term efforts in the area of workplace culture and comfort in a positive light."

The number of job-related illnesses has decreased to zero over the past eight years at Avia Ashok Leyland Motors, and the economic significance and the benefits of investments in safety and the protection of health are well illustrated by additional indicators. In the years 2003-2006 the average annual percentage of work incapacity per employee at the company was 0.24%, whereas the same statistic in 2007-2010 (when the company was part of the Hinduja Group) was nearly one-half, or 0.13%. Work-related injuries per 100 employees were in the range of 1.1 to 3.1 in the years 2003-2006; in 2007-2010 these figures had systematically declined. Over the past two years the figure was less than one work-related injury per 100 employees; the year before last the value of this indicator was zero!

Due to the fact that the program includes substantial demands on environmental protection, fire prevention, workplace conditions, health care and systemic elements of accident prevention, the "Safe Company" program can be regarded as comprehensive from the perspective of safety and the protection of workplace health. These measures could not be implemented using other documents and standards.
